Deer Creek. where to launch!

Ok I have some questions tonight

How is the wind typically at the Island compared to the boat beach (near the dam). I guess a bit lighter with a wind shadow near the beach when the water is high like now.
The Island has a much better reach but I am a little concerned about the effect of the hook on the wind especially now that with the high water we end up much further behind the hill.
Also Would it be better to launch from the Charleston side near the highway? Bigger chop and good wind? It seems there is plenty of parking just by the water

This year we'll have many options. Charleston to the extreme North could be deep enough to sail, no docks, a few boats, but the old weeds will have to die off.
Island Beach could be packed with the common man, no big sandy beach to spread out the Sat. crowds. Once they add two docks it could be a zoo, both for parking and launching. The wind rips around the corner on a good day, once it fills in, perhaps the 'hook' effect could move the best wind closer to the Island. Upside is water spouts to rinse off, grassy rigging. Downside could be hard for beginners with the rock dance and no beach.
Rainbow Bay Point area has the most potential. Long reach, no docks, boats, Rangers trying to give "no wake" tickets. Very quiet over there, no weeds, mini pavilions w/ bar b cues. With water levels high its easy access, plus you can see the wind at the Dam. I'm looking forward to more 'space', its getting to where Trevor and Troy are hooking too many $150 reels, and I'm running out of instant excuses.
The dam is always a favorite in Oct, but this year it could have a dock again, and that cramps a windsurfing style.
These are just my opinions, anyone who sails DC has a favorite launch, and this year if the endless winter ever stops its going to be epic.

I think John has the right ideas. After the crowds start showing up, the Rainbow Bay area is probably going to be the call. When you are out on the point, they is nothing to block the wind and there is a nice long reach. Island Beach has pretty good wind, but launching off the rocks can be a little tricky. The water level will drop this summer and expose the beach again, but like John said there is not a lot of room for the crowds there. There are days when Sailboat Beach has good wind, but it is a short reach and a real steep bank into the water. Back many years ago it also got very crowded there. With the water back up we may see the hobie cat and other sailboat crowds show up again.
