MONEY!!!

HA HA HA HA HA!!! I remember those days... I don't know if we should call them the good ol' days! ;) I seriously can't believe that we used to sail like that... Although, I think this video was a little before the time I started on my friend's Dad's Bic Dufor Wing circa 79'... But no footstraps! No harnesses! No Battens! No UWA website! No Craig! No Tendons! No Skinnys! No two piece masts! No Carbon! No monofilm! No twist off! No "small stuff"! Not much, but it was fun! And still is...

I never saw that big of airs on those big boards back then... This is awesome to see... Also, it's great to see the freestyle stuff... That is beautiful Marty... Thanks... If they could only see the sport now... Oh wait they, we, still are!!! ;) Yeehaw!!!

WOW

I have never even tried 'Pole Smokin', but I can appreciate that video. Did you see how ripped those guys were, you had to be in shape to ride back then!!!! The freestyle those cats had and the footwork was pretty dope. Why can't anyone in Utah do these tricks?

Yea, what's up with that? I see everyone at all ages busting more in kiteboarding here in Utah.

I know. I ask myself that question all the time. Even people tell me that you can kite but not windsurf, what's up with that.

That rocks!! Yeah I remember my first big board and triangle sail . . to think about getting that thing airborne is humorous. I'm for bringing back the old-school freestyle and mixing it with the new school. How about a backward stance backwinded inside the boom goiter. That would be cool!!

Click on this link for about 16 minutes of DC windsurfing in 1979 and the very early80s. Be forewarned, it's basically raw footage converted from super 8 home movies, and the download time is around 5 minutes over a moderately fast DSL connection (click the link, then have a beer, brush and floss, take a nap...)

SWEET!

Jim, Wow, does that ever bring back memories! But, I can not remember how ahead of their time some people were... I can't believe it but there are a number of DUCK TACKS out there! That is amazing... But on those big floaty boards it's a little easier... But add the king size bed sheet as your sail and I am blown away!

Also, many of them are wearing "parachutes"... Safety first huh! ;) Did they carry food and water in those backpacks or were those special flotation devices? Not so sure I'd want the flotation to be on my back..> I only want to stare at the fish for a moment! he he... I don't remember some of those details.

BTW... I listened to Crosby Stills and Na(i)sh's Wasted on the Way, Teach Your Children, and Blackbird while I watched it... Went pretty well! Thanks man... Are you in some of that vid? Have you recognized anybody in those? Lynn Stevens, Grant, Duane...?

Actually almost any song from the 70's goes with this! Bread was cracking me up... Baby I'm a want you... wow... even the new stuff makes it funnier... Bon Jovi, Blaze of Glory... Cake, Satan is My Motor took a minute to blend in but did!!! (beauty of MP3 technology)... Aerosmith Sweet emotions, Eric Clapton... If I could Change the World... Nothing seems to not work with this footage somehow!?! Even Dee Lite, Groove is in the Heart... Must be a classic video!

ALSO, I love it... Notice how they're out there sailing on East, West, North, or South winds... That's before we learned to whine about the wind!

Rick,

Glad you enjoyed the video (and survived the long download). The "parachutes" on the back of the old chest harnesses were mostly used for carrying lunch, although a few people did stuff tiny PFDs in them; back then windsurfers were just another type of boat, and we were required to have registration stickers and a PFD.

As to the sailors in the video, there are only a few I can identify for sure. The guy going really fast early in the video and doing the sail spins toward the end is Scott Williams, Utah's original Windsurfer dealer. The pretty girl in the red chest harness at the front of the tandem (and doing pony-tail dips later on) is Chris Willard, Scott's significant other at the time. There's also a brief cameo by Hoyl Schweitzer (climbing up the bank at Sailboat Beach).
