Repainting board surfaces

I need to resurface my Sonic as the protective coat has come off some of the wood sections. Starboard has 2 methods.

1. Coat the board with Epoxy Finish (the one that takes 50% each of to parts) and sprinkle with fine salt. When the finish is hard, wash away the salt leaving a nice textured surface.
2. Put on the epoxy resin and “place a layer of good quality nylon cloth over the entire area + at least 3cm, and wet this out with resin too. Make sure you do not wet the entire nylon, but leave a dry 'frame' around the repaired area. This area is to allow you to peel off the nylon once the resin has cured”.

My experience on the 2nd method says you will never get the cloth off. Has anyone tried the salt method?

Ken, have done the sugar deck, with urethane clear coat sprayed over the sugar. Worked nicely, sutlble but effective texture. Haven't done salt. Coating with epoxy is heavier. Urethane spray lacquer works well.

If you want to try epoxy and nylon, come by and get some nylon "peel ply" from me here at work - 1042 West 2780 South. Never have tried it on a board, but it should work fine. Is designed to leave an agressive texture on composites before bonding. Better than commercial nylon cloth probably. Call me to chat: 886-2624, ext. 108, press "0" to page if you get my VM.

Always good to try something on a little patch first.

Hi Ken, I also have done the "sugar" deck. First you tape off the parts
you don't want decked, then you lay down a thin coat of epoxy, then
sprinkle with salt (cauze sugar draws ants). If you have a nice
spreader (maybe a fertilizer spreader for salt), you should be able to lay
down a pretty uniform deck. If you can find a fine enough salt, maybe a
sifter. Once done, dry, sand lightly, and run
water over the deck (to wash out the salt). Dimitrije's method of
sprayning in a deck rather than using painted on epoxy, works quite well
also, but I find the painted in decks last a little longer.

I layed in one deck with washed sand (on a polyester board). It wasn't
particularly pretty, but it was very rough, and lasted the boards entire
life.
