I heard a great story about this picture last night from an old windsurfing and work friend. Seems his son Jeff is one of the sailors in this photo. Officials with the flotilla of boats organized by the California Fish and Game had directed the windsurfers out of the channel to allow the whales to pass. Of course the whales, being kindred spirits, seemed to be attracted to the windsurfers and followed them.
What an awesome experience that must have been. Glad it turned out alright.
