I think there is some good kiting to be had out at the Bird Refuge. The cells just to the north west of Willard would be fun on a south. There are roads that surround the cells and you could kite next to the south berm on a south for smooth water. The further north you go the shallower it gets. I'd like to give a report, but I dont get out enough. I have been wanting to get out there for the last couple of years. It might offer smoother wind that willard because it is just a little bit more west, but thats just a guess. Here's a pic if anyone wants to go check it out. Also, Steve H use to and probably still manages the area out there. I asked him about kiting there at the summer games kite event, he said no problem, have fun. I think there are some signs that limit access to certain cells so obey or ask.

Here are some pics from the Bear River Bird Refuge, all of Ken L and a launch of many. For directions to where we were, take the Bear River Bird Refug exist (there is a sign off of I-15), head west till you get the to bird refuge loop. Instead of going right with traffic, turn left (south). Follow the dirt road till you get to the built up wood overlook and park.
Winds were light when we got out there about 5-6pm (when pics were taken), then picked up quite a bit (15-20?), no pics cause we were having a good time!

Kited till dark, about 8. Pretty good time. Kind of like a big rush lake. the water was knee to waste deep everywhere we kited with mud on the bottom similar to rush. One road was almost perpendicular to the wind direction (south) and the other road was about parallel which made it easy to walk back up wind when the wind was light.

Im stoked to get a sess in too. The water is fresh from the bear river. I think there was some stringy bird poop near the shore line, or leaches, probably poo. they keep water circulating through the cells to keep the water semi fresh and prevent an out break of bad stuff that can kill the birds. But I think the water could get funky in the summer.
there is no replacement for rush, thats for sure. But this seems like another good south wind option, especially if willard gets full.
