From Kiteforum,

"Don't know if you've heard about it this winter, but snow kiting within wilderness areas has been threatened in Oregon this winter. There is a group actively lobbying to BAN kiting on public lands and within wilderness areas. These people are motivated and organized.. so kiters must be the same.

If they are successful, the Ban will be FEDERAL and banning kiting from any Wilderness designated area in the US. We already have it banned in some national parks, like Yellowstone and Teton, which both offer AMAZING snowkite terrain. If we lose this one, it will set precedent and make it easy to establish other kite bans on public lands. We must stand together as the kiters of the whole world to fight this ban and establish access on public lands for kiters worldwide. The precedent must be set IN FAVOR of kiting!!

Please everyone sign it!!! And please spread this in all forums worldwide!"

All,

We should take this threat very seriously. I've seen groups like SUWA and others work to close public lands to multi-use access. They are ruthless, well funded and have alot of time on their hands to find opportunities to impose their views on the use millions of acres used by millions of people.
I am a big fan of kiting, and want to do it every chance I get, but I also love off-road motorcycling and general outdoor recreation. I've seen the available areas to do these types of activities shrinking year after year. If anyone is familiar with Factory Butte, you'll know just what I'm talking about. An entire area, ideal for off-road recreating was closed by some obscure petition. I would hate to see Skyline closed to kiting because kiting in the winter disturbs the mating rituals of a subspecies of the hairless wasatch newt.
I've signed this petition but am also talking to other groups like the Blue Ribbon Coalition, USA-All and others to see if they're familiar with this attempt to close areas to kiting. I'm sure the snowmobiling community is aware of things like this, and could be a good partner to help fend off such attacks to access.
I hope we can stop this action and the others that are sure to follow.
