6/13 Lindon

Postby Mark Johnson » Fri Jun 14, 2013 8:47 am

Arrived around 4:00 and the wind was dying. I pumped the 15 and just as iI got the lines attached it ramped up. Leo let ride the 12m ADI, Thanks Leo! Came back in and pumped my 9m that I got from Vern. That thing was folded up better than a kite from the factory! Thanks Vern!
Kind of week on the 9m so I came in after about 20 min. Then the bigger gust started rolling in and all but Todd and Klein stayed out. Late comers Chase and Brad rigged and went out just in time to be on the water while it switched North. Huge gust came through and Chase made it in. We all watched as a lone windsurfer and Brad were blasted untill Brad released his kite. Brad H. recorded 40 plus on his wind meter. I think that the previous gust had to be 50 plus.

I wanted to post on this.
I'm glad everyone made it out OK. I hope Brad didn't loose his kite.

I was able to get to Lindon a little earlier. There were a few of us out from about 3:00 on. But about 5:30ish it started to get wierd. Tyler was the guy who really had it nailed as he saw what looked to be micro bursts coming from the north. A few of us got off the water and packed it up. I can't claim to be a wind expert. But it is really important to know the forecast. The north switch was predicted and came just as expected. When a strong south gets slammed in to by a really strong north some wierd sh*#t is going to happen. Also Tyler lives at the lake. Really his house is on the lake. He was trying to warn everyone to get off. only a couple people did. I tend to defer to the local expert. When Tyler tells me to get off the lake I get off the lake.

We're all big boys and girls but please be safe. It is easy to forget that this is Utah and it is summer when there are all kinds of moisture, electricity and high/low pressure cells moving around and building up in the air.

Maybe one of the admins could post a reminder on the main forum about summer weather patterns here. John Guay or Craig could one of you guys post that?

Here's to more fun days!

Just flew back in town from WA DC last night to see the strong winds. Saw some readings that were scary...
I remember last year micro-burst i had to ride out on the lake and plan to never have to do that again...

A cold frontal passage has ushered in some cooler air, but has been accompanied by some very strong winds. Here are a few of the peak gusts thusfar from around the area:

Flight Park (near point of the mountain): 72 mph
Saratoga Springs: 68 mph
Lehi: 59 mph
Point of the Mountain: 57 mph
Highland: 54 mph
Antelope Island: 53 mph
Pleasant Grove: 51 mph
Orem: 50 mph

I was the lone windsurfer that had unfortunately lost my fin as the nukefest north hit, so it was a long swim back to the beach with some smoke on the water and waves breaking over my head. If anyone finds a black Curtis Freeride fin, please let me know. Not sure if it floats.
I saw Brad losing a battle with his kite and his board getting blown away, so I swam and got it, but then had a hard time holding onto the gear. Twice a gust ripped the board and sail away from me - up into the air. I hope Brad was able to find his kite - and in one piece.
