Usually the wind at DC is steadiest early and gradually devolves into gusts and holes. Not yesterday! When the wind first appeared about 9:30 it was HORRIBLE, huge gusts, dead calms and wildly fluctuating directions. Looked like a total bust as far as sailing was concerned, but then about 1:30 (against all odds) the wind started to steady out. When I got to the beach, George was ripping it up on his 6.5, with occasional slogging breaks in the wind shadow on the far side. As it appeared that the wind might be backing off a bit, I rigged a 7.0, a decision I quickly regretted; got some screaming rides on it, but had more fun after I rigged down to 6.0.
