The water in Grantsville might never hit 60. Maybe late August. Time to get a good wetsuit.

Shawn,

By now you must be wondering what you started!

A couple of thoughts on PFDs and harnesses:

1.) As Josh mentioned, low profile (kayak) style vest are the way to go. There are even vests on the market now that have a special opening for the hook: http://www.isthmussailboards.com/prodin ... er=NW54906 Useful probably if you use a waist harness, but not really necessary with a seat harness.

2.) Possibly the best option if you prefer waist harnesses is the impact harness: http://www.bigwinds.com/kite/category/47/product/1068 Not USCG approved, but it provides plenty of flotation. Kinda expensive, and they run VERY small (a "large" was tight for me!)

I don't anymore, but I wore a PFD for a long time. Not only did it help with waterstarts but it helped alleviate the pain of landing on your back when learning forward loops. You may have to try a little harder to swim to your gear but you'll last much longer if you don't reach it. I'd suspect you'd want a PFD if you sail downwind of Dale Cook at the gorge as well. You never know when his gear might hit you from 100 yards upwind. Hard to swim when you're unconscious.

Or dead!
Dale claims he could see down wind and there was nobody for his rig to hit or he wouldn't have let go.
Seems like awfully good presence of mind to me but maybe when you're up there for 2 or 3 seconds you have
time to look around and decide where to toss your gear ;*). You and Danger D are the only ones I know who stay up
long enough to look around so you'll have to tell me.

I have a nice PFD design for kayaking. I don't use it any more. Let me know if you want to buy it.
