Footstrap Inserts

Postby kenonstott » Sun Jun 08, 2008 7:16 pm

I am having trouble with footstrap screws pulling out of the inserts. I would get a longer screw but I haven't been able to find any screws with the wide flights these screws have. They must be a special screw for plastics. Can I fill in the holes with epoxy and redrill? Is there a better material to use than epoxy?

Hey Ken, In the past, I have gotten away with using one screw size bigger, but do not go longer.....it will bust through the bottom of the insert, and into the core of the board. I've also done the epoxy thing, but it was on a vent plug hole. If you drill your footstrap inserts out and bigger, just make sure you do not go too deep and into the core. I just used sand paper to ream it out a bit.

I've been able to get stainless screws from the Marine supply stores, which are a pretty good match to thread patterns, but they usually have sharp tips, where the actual screws the ws boards come with are very blunt. It would be best to just get them when you go to the Gorge, from Big winds or Windance, then you get the right ones. Anyway....good luck. We are heading to the Gorge this coming Friday, we could pick you up some. SR

there is a fastener company called mcfeeley's online that sells a stainless screw with a narrow shaft and really wide pitch or threads on the screw

i don't know where you are located, but check out THB inc. they are in north salt lake. i use them for all our industrial fastening needs. they have all the oddball stuff like this there too. they also sell helicoil sets if you end up going that route. swing by, or any fastener store should be able to help you out. if you find out what size the thread is, i was able to buy a bottom tap with the same threads and rethread my inserts which helped out a lot. provided you get a new screw to fit...
