Little Dell?

Postby DevinClarke » Mon Nov 24, 2008 10:52 am

My wife and I were driving up Immigration Canyon yesterday. We came up on Little Dell Res. A fishing buddy had told me that he has seen someone kiteboarding there during the summer months. I figured there must be a reason why it isn't a spotlighted riding spot on this forum. Signs say that it is "watershed". Being from Atlanta, I don't know what "watershed" means. Does anyone have any helpful information.

I also just wanted to thank everyone who contributes to this extremely helpful website. The forecasts (summer and winter) and safety tips are a big help.

Devon,

Little Dell is not a popular kiteboarding spot because the launch is difficult and the relatively small size of the reservior. I have kited there in years past and found the wind to be be more gusty than Deercreek, but still manageable with a good bow kite. It is rideable from two wind directions - East and SW. The east wind actually ends up being a north wind on the water, so you launch at the north end of the lake. This can be a challenge depending on the water level. Usually, the east wind is an early morning occurrence. Usually, the NOAA forecast will mention morning east winds. The SW direction is usually a strong pre-frontal wind. The launch on the south end of the lake is even more challenging. You might be able to drift launch it if you are really good, but you probably need a kite slave to make it happen. I would recommend going to DC or Willard if possible on a day with strong SW winds. I have had a few good sessions there. However, I usually bring my bike in case it is a skunk. There are some nice trails around there.

"Watershed" means that the water if for drinking purposes, so they want us to wear a drysuit, so we don't pee in the water. You can get away with a wetsuit during the summer months.
