Snow kiting in S Utah

Postby Dustin Judd » Mon Jan 12, 2009 6:57 pm

If anyone happens to come down to Southern Utah I would love to hook up for some sessions up on Cedar Mountain. I scouted a few spots on my snow machine I just picked up saturday and think we have a good bit of potential with in a couple minutes ride from Brianhead resort. I haven't found anyone to ride with down here so I would love to hear from anyone interested.

Thanks, Dustin

Dustin,

Sounds good!!! Wish I was headed down to So Utah. I wonder what conditions and wind directions work good for your area? I have snowkited just to the South of Brian Head Peak (Behind the top chairlift) in a west wind. Quite nice terrain. I kited from the road at that pass. Flat near the Hwy, then some nice terrain to the East under the power line and behind the 11,000 foot BH Peak.

Where do you kite there? What weather conditions are good? Hi pressure building in this week.

So far I have located a few large open areas behind the peak with terrain that should be good for kiting. The area next to the road is good but the road is closed right now so a snow machine is the only option for that area. I have kited down on Panguitch Lake afew times but access to that is closed from the Cedar City side until they reopen the road. I will post some reports with pics as I go out on my sled to scout and get some GPS info as well. Wonderground has a few spots under Cedar City that are located up on the Flats, Midway and Brian Head peak that will give a pretty good idea about the days potential before you head up the mountain.

Thanks, Dustin

Keep us posted on the snow conditions... a southerly road trip is always exciting, especially new terrain. I have kited Midway on my way south in past years... and my first snowkite sessions were near the Bhead resort. I wondered about Panguitch Lake, after spending time there last summer... backside access is easier from the north-east I believe.
