On Jon Manwaring's recommendation, I bought a Windtronic 2 ( http://www.windtronic.us/ ) a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. It's omnidirectional, fairly robust, records current, average and maximum windspeed (in MPH, KPH, m/sec or knots) and has excellent battery life.

Thanks I'll look at them. Has anyone seen or used the newer meters that are ultrasonic? I saw a few and I'm wondering about this new technology.

i've got the same one, works great. you can get them on ebay for $91 delivered. I like that it has a female screw insert on the bottom like a camera. you can screw in a mini-tripod and strap it to a fencepost, your car, etc. (just be careful not to leave it behind, which i've done a few times).
