I am going to Cape Hatteras this summer

Postby kenclewis » Mon Apr 09, 2012 4:28 pm

Does anyone have any info so that I might get the best bang for my buck? I have never been there before so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

Call Real Water Sport. realwatersports.com They are in Cape Hatteras. If you are planning to kite there, May, June, Sept. and Oct. are the best month to be there.

Hey,

I used to live in ct and kited down there twice a year. Awesome place. Here is what I know.

You want to stay somehwere in Waves, Rodanthe, Avon, or Buxton (farther down). Most people rent a house with a group of people and split the costs. Are you going with your family? The houses down there are usually 2 to 3 story houses on stilts that during off season can rent per week from $500 - $1000 + during season. Real Watermans retreat is nice as it has direct access to the sounds side and has a launch area, free air pumps and close access to the shop. (http://www.realwatersports.com/watermens)

There is another place, Kitty hawk kites, which is set up the same way as real Watermans retreat. Right on the sound side, pumps and grill. They also have places to stay. The accomadations center is (252) 489 4747, and the kitty hawk kite store is (252) 987- 2297.

If watermans is price, check out "outerbank realty" or google some of the other real estate places that do rentals. Avon cottages is another one. If you want to know of some spots to ride I'll be happy to help you out with what i know as well.

Nicholas

If the wind is dead, you can head to any shop to rent surf boards, or standup paddle. Kitty Hawk kites, (they have several stores on the island) aslo has hang gliding lessons at the sand dunes near Nags Head. (30 min north/up) the island. Its a cool place to check out.

I kited in Hatteras for a couple weeks in 2006. Morton turned me on to a couple of these spots. I liked the scene at Hatteras Island Surf and Sail Shop.

The owner Bart is a real character, you can(in 2006) launch right off the grass in front of the shop.
If you want a good low key(dirtbaggish) camping experience just up the road from HISS is RODANTHE WATERSPORTS and Campground.

I imagine camping in mid summer could be HOT but when I was there in late Sept/Oct it was perfect.

The guy that runs this place is a surfer and will give you an accurate surf report everyday.

Enjoy.

If you plan to camp, I would check out this site;

Camping and sailing right on the sound. Good prices and you can probably work a deal for a longer stay and if you pay in cash.

Thanks, all of you, for all the help and advice. It sure is nice to belong to a community of great and helpful people. I am excited to get out there this summer. My brand new grandson will be joining us for the days we're there so I decided to go with the condo instead of the campground. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again!,
Ken
