Lake Powell Kitesurfing

I headed down to Lake Powell this past weekend to escape the heat and check out some kite spots that I haven't been to. I found a little piece of heaven, and possibly the best water riding in Utah.

We found a campsite on a sandstone bluff that was on a jetty of land dividing two bays, so we could launch and head almost any direction. It was the perfect Kite-camp. The water was so warm and the wind came in from the south all weekend. Saturday gave up the best rides, with early am sessions, a strong mid-day push, and an epic sunset session from Bullfrog to the Ferry and back.

The amazing scenery of cliffs, combined with the warm water and strong steady winds, made for the best riding I have ever had in Utah, it was unreal. I'm not sure what the normal wind is there tho, this weekend was powered by a southerly push. But if its good there all the time, I think I found a new home :D

Anyone else checked out good spots on Powell? Its one big intricate lake.

You lucky dog.. Lake powell is really unpredictable.. I have taken sailing gears down there 3 times (to houseboat), only to sail 60 minutes in 2 1/2 weeks. tough lake to predict and very choppy (boat traffic) during summer days..

good on ya

Lake Powell

Stokes and I (Chris) were down there about two weeks ago. We got a really good day in up near Good Hope Bay. It was a bit gusty though which made jumping a bit sketchy. Eventually it got too strong for my 9m and I didn't have anything smaller. We tried to kite in Halls Creek, there were some excellent islands out in the middle to start from but it was not quite consistent enough. We thought there was a lot of potential though. We found the launches to be a bit difficult, mostly rocks and thorn bushes. The deep water relaunch was also a bit tricky.

Where did you kite at? Did you find a good launch site? I would love to ride down there some more.
