Kiting next weekend, Rio Vista??

Postby john l » Fri May 30, 2008 10:28 pm

So I've got a few days off in a row next weekend. Is this a good time of year to go to Rio Vista, CA? A few have talked about at the launches recently. Haven't found too much about the place with the web searches. Is there a camp ground near by? Thought to go there since Gorge trip is in July. Anyone else got some time off next weekend? Any other suggestions within the same distance?

John,
Check out these coordanents,
38° 3'27.51"N
121°47'9.72"W

This is usually called Sherman Island, in the Rio Vista area.
Car camping in the parking lot, but tents not allowed.
There are campgrounds along the road.
I've only been there once, I'm sure others have more info.
Here is a link to the forum.

Thanks Marty,
Not sure if I can switch my work schedule around but I can see on Monday if I can get the days off when you guys are going. Still could probably only do 6 days though.
Was looking at the mileage more and another rider in the truck would be nice. Hint, hint. Stupid $4/gal now. Oh well.

Yes Sherman Island(rio vista) is usually good this time of year. Most kiters launch at the county park:

There is also a launch called little baja that is good for those who can't go upwind. If you kite on an eb tide the current helps you stay upwind.

These are the only decent launches for kites(last time i was there). many more launches exist for windsurfers.

Plenty of free camping along the river. Pay camping at the county park.

It's a 700 mile drive to get there, same as the gorge. That's $300-ish in gas at 20MPG.

For about the same price you can fly to sacramento and rent a car(sherman is about a 40minute drive from Sac airport). round trip tickets on Southwest are usually $200ish. Maybe not on such short notice though.

I would leave Thurs or Friday. Would have to be back on Tuesday Not sure if I'm going unless I can get someone to come along. I heard gas is around 4.50 in Cali.
Interested?
