The Point

With hopes of riding a bit of snow this year in the field just south of point of the mtn, this would put a damper on that for snow kiting. I wonder how it will affect the para/hang gliding as well. I was wishing the water park would be a kite surfing park not a wakeboarding park....

The field below the point is not a great place for kiting, it is not a big loss. The wind is usually gusty and nasty there.

Plus, there was mention of a lake for water sports... Looks pretty frightening... Hadn't seen the pics till now!

Bummer, get it this winter while you can! A major loss for local 'in-town' snowkiting. Also about the dumbest thing a politician could do...typical.... put a giant wind block building and funky rotor directly in front of one of the nations premiere and most consistent paragliding sites. I guess one up for Ikea and local taxes!

Sounds like I moved out of the 'Big Chity" just in time....living at the Point felt like I lived in New Zealand, flying and kiting every single day for years. Now pilot friends tell me that with all the new buildings below the North side, the wind patterns have been disrupted and the flying is not as good as it was in the past. Looks like the south side is going down as well, all in the name of progress.. hmmm.

Man, if they got rid of the buildings and just filled the field with water we would have an Uber Rush for summer kitesurfing. Maybe its not to late to lobby the idea!

You know this may not be the group that this development would affect however I think more people need to speak up and post negative comments on this and fight something like this. I posted the following in hopes someone important might see it:

There's a HUGE problem with this that no-one has seemed to address and that is that this projects name-sake "THE POINT" is actually named after the "Point of the Mountain" Which the state has protected as a paragliding state park. If you're a paraglider then you already know that the small developments south of the point of the mountain have already affected the wind and are causing rotor turbulence in a place that has long been world-renown for it's smooth thermal generated winds and perfect learning conditions. That's slowly changing and though I'm far from an environmentalist a development of this nature would pretty much destroy the winds there and make all the effort put in by the flying community to protect the point . . a . . "MUTE" POINT. It's sad that the city's already low tourist derived income will disappear due to some ridiculous development like this. You'd think they were filming a Footloose 2 and were scouting some new ugly building where Kevin Bacon could shuffle his feet to the demise of Paraglider and Hang glider pilots everywhere!

My two cents would be to ride at the Church farm. Much better for snowkiting. Freshly plowed field, no brush, with a few rocks thrown in, but way cleaner than the point. I've tried the south side of the point in the field numerous times and always leave frustrated. You either get lofted or sit through lulls. If you can drive to the top you have a chance at decent wind, but the top is usually so windblown there isn't enough snow to ride. I used to landboard there a bunch when I was bored. Nice, nice wind. I feel sorry for the paragliders if this goes through. Another reason to support the Utah Lake Commission.
The Farm is also a huge riding area with fairly clean wind on a north or south. Not much terrain to speak of, but if we get some decent snow you can ride through the sage at the south end. There were some sprinklers in the middle of the field last year, but not too much of a problem. You still can get a half mile tack. Take your rock board and you can ride when we get only a few inches of snow in the valley. If you stick to the west side you won't hit much more than mud.

Would be nice if it got windy enough to hit the water once more before the snow flies! This year panned out to be even worse than last for me. Wish DC would give it up for those who have to work during the day!
