sail size: kite size?

Postby Erik Holmgren » Mon May 11, 2009 8:56 am

Reading through the forecasts and the wind logs i've seen quite a few numbers like 5.2, 8.4, 4.7, etc.. could someone post a rough guide on how the size of a sail compares to a size of kite for that wind range? I know Craig does in the forecasts at some points (no disrespect intended craig, your forecasts are sick!) but being able to convert it without having that there seems like it'd be a good thing to know... trying to be a bit less ignorant about the windsurfing brothers and how it works with them ;)

Thanks!

I multiply the sail size by 2 which it give me a ball park Idea what kites size I should pump up for me. If you weight less then 150 pound, then you should multiply sail size by 1.5 to give you a rough idea.

For example,

Sail sizes Kite size
4.2 X2 8 to 9m

8.4 X2 15 to 17m

5.4 X2 10 to 11m

When they design windsurfing sails the area in square meters usually doesn't come out in even numbers. Hence the fractions of meters. When they first started describing sizes in meters instead of storm sail, or low wind sail, they rounded the numbers off so all sails were 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, etc. I'm sure kites are rounded off to even numbers. The sail sizes still increase in half meter increments so if you have a 4.2 the next size up would be 4.7. I would consider a 4.7 to be a 5.0 and as Jake said double that to a 10 meter kite.

Hi Erick,

Doubling the size works as a general rule, When there's potential for either at a specific location I usually
post something like 7.5/15 meaning 7.5 sails, 15M Kites. You'll also notice I don't post a sail size for Rush,
because you just can't sail in 20 inches of water. But, Kites cover a larger range of wind than Sails,
and so depending on where the wind is you might see me post 6.5/12, or 7.5/12 .
If I say trainer Kite I mean below 8M, and when I say huge I'm talking 17M.

Hope that helps,

-Craig
