DC Weather Stations

Postby KyrkWright » Tue May 19, 2009 10:47 am

I contacted UDOT to ask about the DC Dam Chute and the Sundance Arrowhead weather stations. This is the reply I received (which I got about an hour after emailing):
-----
Thanks for the email regarding the Deer Creek and Sundance wx stations. The Sundance sites is actually owned and operated by the Sundance Ski Area and they are aware of the problem. However, the Deer Creek Dam Chute (DCC) site has been taken down for the summer. Traditionally the sites that are operated and maintained by UDOT's Avalanche Safety program are decommissioned every spring, and redeployed in the fall. There are a multitude of reasons for this, probably the most compelling is that the weather stations are most prone to lightning strikes in the spring and summer months (since they are in elevated areas.) The DCC station will be back up and running next fall when the Avalanche Staff is back in full swing. The SND site should be back on line when Sundance Ski Area has had a chance to trouble shoot and mitigate the problem. If you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to give me a shout or drop me a line.
Thanks,
Ralph

SND is down again. When and if it comes back it would be nice to know who is to thank for running it.

Another thank you, Kirk, for looking into that.

:?: Does anyone think there's a chance we could convince the Utah State Parks that they should support having a weather sensor there? -- for boating safety and support of sport fisherman primarily, of course, not just for kooky windriders ;))
(probably right not now with state budgets being what they are ... but ever?)

:?: Are there any UWA's (besides me) who pay for iwindsurf or ikitesurf? Perhaps we could convince them to put up a station at DC and a few spots around UL would be nice, too.

FYI: I've been looking at Jim Southwick's DC and Charleston wind logs and the wind sensor at Mt. Baldy. There was some correlation this past month, particularly on days when it was good. But it seems the start of the blow is delayed by an hour at MBY, so not very good for a predictor.

Yes, I pay for iwindsurf. I use the wind vector forecast feature quite often.
