Got to agree with Les on that point....anyone jumping or riding upwind of that rock jetty without a helmet is just plain dumb. Talk about ignoring lessons and deaths from Kiteboardings past.

On that note, if you are a good enough kiter to be jumping, especially if you are going big or throwing kite loops.... then you are good enough and should be wise enough to ride out of the cove and upwind.... where there is plenty of room to SAFELY SEND it with out endangering all of the other riders and beginners that are close by and downwind of you.

Just my two cents as I watch our local beaches become more crowded every session. Lets keep it clean not kooky.

I tgotally disagree, helmet use is a choice not mandatory,

Its not the first one to jump the jetty or the last but the first not make it that will be remembered (or dismembered).
As for helmets I think it should be your own choice when you have the experience to know what you are in for. I try to always wear mine. As for saftey though I have seen many new kiters without any floatation in deep water. Not a good idea in my opinion. I know I am the goofiest looking kiter out there with my helmet and chepo lifejacket (please no pictures) but I always kite better when I feel safe. There has already been one death of a boater this summer on UL that could have been avoided with a lifejacket.

nice pics. I sure miss it all. Doc says I will be ready in three weeks. Cant wait. I love the topic on helmet no helmet. What do you guys think? could someone that gets hurt, god forbid maybe killed. possibly cause the local agency that enforces the beach at lincoln to close it to all kiteboarding? I guess what I am saying is all of our opinions matter, do they not? I have mentioned before how other kite communities have lost there access because of this kind of thing. so this little topic does matter, or not? have fun be careful...

There has not ever been a helmet issue until this post, According to the riders on the beach that go kiting at Utah Lake we choose to ride with helmets or we choose not to, Most begginers wear helmets and we as a community support but do not inforce it, I make all my students were helmets that i provide from my personal collection, Kite Utah has supplied me with a xl helmet that comes in handy when I get a larger then normal head, becuase we support helmet use in the kiting community. I recomond that all my students buy and continue to use helmets in their kiting careers.

Why don't you guys come to the beach and speak with the 25+ kiters that don't post on the website and find out what their feelings are? I think that would be a great way to find out what the vibe in the community is.

"To wear or not to wear, that is the question". When it comes to helmets, I think we are all a little conflicted on this issue, I would have said AD/DC, but that would have left Marty out, as he is only DC. Personally, I wear both a Helmet and PFD when kiting, except when I'm kiting in a warm location, wearing only board shorts, where I wear neither, go figure. I will not ride my MTB or Dirt Bike without one, but when I jump on my Harley, I roar off with just a bandanna. Like all things in life, it's a matter of choices and the resulting consequences of those choices. Most everyone would agree that wearing a helmet is probably a good idea. But some choose not to wear one. So be it. We do not have a mandatory helmet or PFD law for kiting. Untill there is one, there use is OPTIONAL. End of story, IMHO
