Looking for Gorge trip buddy(s) 8/23-9/2

Postby June Akrs » Wed Aug 12, 2009 2:48 pm

I'm jonesing!!!!

I have a spate of free time from Sun 8/23 thru Wed 9/2 and am looking to make a 3-7 day trip to the Gorge during that time. I am looking to share anything potentially including driving and gas (if so, your vehicle, my Prius can only handle me and my gear), camping space and duties (I have my own camping gear), and trading opinions on where to sail that day.

Mostly I am looking for buddy(s) for safety in sailing. So if you're a Utah sailor looking to be in the Gorge during that time, please give me a shout.

PM me or email sreka_sandy "at" yahoo.com

My resume:
I've been windsurfing since 1986, NJ reservoirs, PA lakes, Lake Erie, Jersey shore (bay and waves), Outer Banks of NC (sound and waves), Isla Margarita, then O'ahu (Hawaii) for 10 years. Mostly Bump and Jump, but waves, too. Moved to Utah last year. Sailed Grantsville a few times last year, had a good half-hour on a 4.5 at PBH last week during that epic 8/6 blow. But no Gorge yet! It's time.

The Jersey Shore Eh? I Can't go to the gorge in your time frame, but I'd love to. I'm going back up later due to a thing called work. But if you can't find a traveling companion, there's usually no problem finding lots of Utards up there. My mother in law has a place in Barnegat Light and we go there every year. Sometimes twice a year. Most of my sailing there has been off of 86th street in Brant Beach. Terry, the owner of Island Surf and Sail has always hooked me up with rental gear as I fly back most of the time.Great place to learn how to kite. Shallow water and steady, light wind most of the time.Watch out for the Greenheads.Ever go to Rick's American Cafe in Barnegat Light? Great place to party. The bands don't start untill 11:00 P.M. but play untill 4:00 Hope to meet you on the water someday. Tommorrow they have forecasted 23-26 with gusts to 40 in Evanston. I think I'll work Sat or Sun instead.Come up to Sulphur Creek tommorrow. Could be fun.Tom W.

Thanks for the memories Tom!
Did I see you on Friday at Sulphur and didn't know it?
Brant Beach was a great place to learn windsurfing, too. Another favorite was Seaside Park for the cold but windy Spring and Fall (shorter drive from Philly and more folks to sail with when the cold had thinned the crowd to the most devout boardheads). I eventually gravitated to Lakes Bay (West Atlantic City) in the summer as it seemed to have a bit better wind (owing to some thermal effect, I think, probably from all the cash burning up) although the aesthetics were much less. All told, I sailed all kinds of sites from Sandy Hook to Cape May. But Brant was one of the best. Too bad I didn't know about Ricks Cafe, but I was usually too exhausted and had a long drive home. Glad you still get to enjoy it once in awhile.
