Lake Mojave Jan13-15, Feb 6-Mar7

Tried for 2 weeks in January but got called back to Boise for a funeral after only 3 days. Still, the 3 days were some great sailing.

Sailed Grants and skied Brighton the 1st week of February, then Penny retired, we packed up the Motor home, and moved down to Bullhead/Henderson for a month. Got 11 days of sailing the 2nd trip, spent 14 days in Henderson with my daughter (+4 grandkids and the new Great-granddaughter), and the rest touring around. No epic days but got 2 very sweet 4.7 days. Most of the rest of the time I was either on the 5.2 or 6.0. Spent almost the whole trip on the 86L iSonic and that left me grinning. Everyone there said we were too late for the season but ended up agreeing that it was much better than expected north wind for February and early March. Only had one south day at 6-mile Cove with the rest north at Katherine Landing.

Camped at Katherine a lot of nights as well as at Riverside Casino parking lot. Camped at 6-mile Cove one night with only 1 other camper there. There are well-maintained vault restrooms at both 6-mile and Katherine Cabinsite-Point. My daughter lives on a very wide street and we were able to camp in front of her house when in Henderson. It was 1.5 hours between my daughter’s house and the sail beach with 4-lane divided highway almost all the trip.

As for Lake Mojave, it is the clearest water I ever sail on, matching Bear Lake. I guess all the sediment winds up in Powell or Mead. The water leaves a lot of spots on the sails indicating lots of dissolved solids. It was hard to not jump off too soon as you felt you were going to run aground even when it was 10’ deep. The main sail channel crosses a narrow section of the lake which appears to have a lot of boats flying through at full speed when it gets warmer. That had me pretty spooked on the warmer days after my near-death experience at Deer Creek. The water was still too cool for the water sports group which improved safety. The water was 52 degrees (way better than Grants) and the lake was 95% full (Mead is 45% full). I used my summer suit with rubber arms 5 days and a steamer the rest. Air temperatures usually started high 50’s and went as high as 82 while we were there. We were told that it was at least 10 degrees warmer than normal. The shore is one bay after another which made it fun to go exploring in our kayak. I have a good map of the lake if anyone needs one

Off to a great start on the season. As of today I have 18 days, 4 at Grants and 14 at Mojave.

Sailing both the Gorge and Utah on my 8'2" HiTech and my 3 Starboards; Sonic 85L, S-Type 115L, and Carve 135L. Small quiver is Northwave, larger sails are Ezzy and Sailworks. Often in my white Odyssey but also in my wife's motor home.
