Blackberry Access

Postby joshgubler » Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:16 pm

I got an email from Rick saying that one of the members can't login via blackberry...in order to fix this we need to know if it's a problem with his account or with blackberry access in general.

If you use a blackberry please post here saying, "Yes I can login fine" or "No I can't login" or "Yes I can login, but I have to do this...".

Thanks.

I can log in on my Blackberry. There are a couple changes that could be made to the website to help Blackberry users that would probably not affect anyone else too dramatically:

1. Allow users to read the forum without logging in. If you only had to login to post that would be terrific. My Blackberry doesn't store the cookie properly to remember my password, so I have to log-in every time I wish to read posts on the forum.

2. A weather page that is graphic-free would be fantastic.

3. Since I have started wishing, here is my dream page. A webpage that we could send text messages to that would automatically record the name of the sender, date, and time. It would make it so easy to send a wind update (i.e. DC 10-15 mph or Sulphur whitecapping 5.5). Not only would it be helpful to anyone who wants to sail, but doesn't know where to go, but it would also be beneficial in helping keep a record of the wind because a lot of riders don't bother to post on the windlog.

"Crackberry" access:

Postby Trip Houk » Fri Aug 10, 2007 8:44 am

Josh, Mike, Rick et all,

Thanks for your response to my Blackberry issue. Mike helped me solve the problem which began because my work e-mail changed. It was simply caused because the security measures require you to give your email and password before changing your profile and after 5 years, I didn't remember which of my 2 dozen passwords to apply. phew@!

However, this does bring up another issue which you may want to address at some point: Many of us use the site much as we use the iwindsurf site in the gorge. Since they've done away with the pagers, they offer a variety of subscriptions for wireless access use that are invaluable. The "WAP" format enables users to set up their site preferences (eg. Dougs, Swell, Arlington etc) and automatically launch current conditions, charts and forcasts in a special format which fits the screen of a Blackberry or any internet enabled cell phone.

You techno geeks out there might know how that's done and we could get real-time data and feedback from our cell phones. This would be a great service to our members and make the site more user friendly to remote mobile users. As it is now the site comes up in miniature and may require extra squinting. In the interim, thanks again for your attention to my minor difficulties.

Trip:

This is exactly what I was proposing at the Annual Dinner.
In order to make a kick butt weather page for computers and phones we need to use some extensive php programing and mysql. I have been slowly learning how to do it in my extra time. (which means over the last three months I have reviewed three chapters of my php book. ouch)

I think this is where Josh Gubler might be able to really help us out.
iwindsurf really opens your eyes to possibilities.
