Where to Ride 9/18-9/20

Postby Craig Goudie » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:40 am

Well, I blew it yesterday, so for what it's worth today, not much wind,
and probably too many clouds for the Lowe effect. Best bet is still
Sulfur PM in the 6.5 range.

Tomorrow South wind. Looks strong at Sufur, maybe get down to your 4 M stuff PM.
Grantsville AM pretty strong 5.0, lull, 3 PM gusty restart. DC strong
and gusty starting early probably about 11 AM 7.5 -5.5 (sometimes in the
same gust). UL MM19 looking 5.5ish PM also. Kiters keep watch as
I think there will be some strong rogue gusts at most UL launches.

Thursday more SW 6.5 Sulfur PM.

I'm off to the Gorge till Next Tuesday. I'll post when I can, enjoy those
Weds rides!

Don't forget about Willard which is now the best bet for kiting on strong south wind days.

Willard.....

I've been skunked there on south wind days more than I can count

It will blow good right to the point of the mountain in north Ogden, then shut off at Willard.
My theory is, it is like an eddy in a river. The wind blows up the Wasatch mountain range until it hits that south facing mountain in North Ogden, and causes it to decouple off the area around Willard. That is why it needs to be blowing semi's over on I-80, to be good.

Overall, early is better than late. But to early is also a waste of time.
I'm watching the meso in Box Elder and Weber and Tooele county. Looking for winds in the west to be 30mph at lots of sites. The Willard POE site is down.

Lots of sandy beach because of the low water, and lots of flat water coves around each corner.

I'm probably going to Willard as soon as it starts to look promising, I'll post an on site report on here as soon as I get there.

Just some suggestions....
Windsurfers should rig on the west side of the bay because the bay is shallow and you may nick your fin getting out of the bay. (rig one size bigger than you think you should, there is to much slogging going on at Willard. Consider it a treat if you get blown off the water and have to rig down) IMHO

Alex just follow the signs to willard and you can miss the launch.

As I recall Farmington Bay also opens up this time of year. I don't recall if the date is September 15 or 25th. It may be worth checking out. I have never ridden there, but I know that Rossberg has scored some nice rides there in the past.

South end of Willard

Postby kenclewis » Wed Sep 19, 2007 11:20 am

Marty,
Have you ever tried the south east corner of Willard. The water is so lo that there is plenty of open beach and possibly even some little islands and shallow water. It might also overcome the "eddy" effect of the wind. The problem is the wind would be blowing you out to sea. Any thoughts?

The way you get there is to go to Smith and Edwards and head straight west till the road ends and you can take a dirt road north, (very bumpy!) It goes north for about 1/2 mile then west about a mile, then north again to the dike. Walk up over the dike and there you are.
